There are times when we all feel overwhelmed with different initiatives. This seems to be one of those times. We have CCSS, TPEP, curriculum adoptions and any number of new things happening in education. It’s times like these that we need reminders about why we do what we do. We need opportunities to learn together and enjoy the company of fellow teachers. Over the next two months three local councils in Western Washington will be sponsoring events that will give us opportunities to grow and connect.

March 9th in Bellingham, WORD and NSRC will partner to bring Harvey “Smokey” Daniels to share research on Best Practice teaching.

WORD March 9

March 23rd in Everett, Snohomish County Reading Council will partner with American Reading to bring Dick Allington to share research that will help us teach reading to ”Every Child, Every Day.”

Thank you to our conference participants. It was great to spend the day with 200 educators learning and collaborating about effective instructional strategies for all students…implementing the CCSS. The conference feedback always gives us ways to improve and ideas to celebrate. Here are a few things we have learned:

Ways to improve:

Increase communication

One building is the preference

Kindergarten specific sessions would be appreciated

Learning from the conference we should CELEBRATE- (Quotes from participant feedback forms)

Colleen Cruz should come back. The strong, specific writing strategies she taught will improve student learning acorss Washington!

The specificity of the CCSS and the shifts we’ll be making for our students will be challenging, but also align with what I would want for all students in my classroom.

Getting a chance to look at the writing expected in the CCSS makes me think that more time should be given to writing across the curriculum- every day!

This year WORD is looking into ways to best support colleagues throughout Washington. If you were able to attend our Fall Conference, what was your BIG LEARNING? If you couldn’t join us, what can WORD do to support you in the future?

Excited to continuing learning together-

I can’t believe that in just over a week we will be sitting in Everett High School learning from Colleen Cruz. What an opportunity! Today I was learning with the NWESD 189 Literacy Leader Cadre and it occurred to me that many teachers are overwhelmed by so many changes. We are shifting to a new teacher principal evaluation system, adopting instructional frameworks, moving toward Common Core State Standards…and other initiatives throughout Washington. It also occurred to me that Saturday, October 20th will be a great way to identify areas where we are already aligned to the Common Core State Standards and where we may do some “revision” of our instruction. Nikki Elliott Schuman will also be at the conference to share how writing will be assessed with the new Smarter Balance Assessment! How fortunate we are to have amazing educators leading our learning. Hope you can join us!

Across the country teachers, schools, districts and entire states are agreeing on the same proficiency standards. As a child I grew up all over the United States, in fact, I could be the poster child for the Common Core State Standards.

As a young learner on the west coast I was doing, “just great,” but in the mid-west I was considered “gifted.” Highly capable me arrived in California to be placed in the remedial class for struggling learners. The vast discrepancies in my “ability” were not because moving made me drastically different as a learner, but because teachers had different expectations. They had different expectations of students, but they also had different approaches entirely. Some effective and others not so much. I’m quite sure the many times I had to paint Styrofoam planets did not lead to deep understandings of the solar system. Did my teachers know the impact they were making on me as a learner?

Over the last couple of years the work of John Hattie has been highlighted in research presentations, professional literature and all over the web. This year John Hattie’s groundbreaking book, Visible Learning, which synthesized more than 15 years of research involving millions of students and the biggest collection of evidence-based research, has been formatted for teachers.
