Summer is a time for rest, rejuvination and READING! Each summer many of us pile professional books, magazines, children’s literature and a variety of other reading on our list. This summer has been no different for me, but one book has been a stand out. Penny Kittle’s Book Love Developing Depth, Stamina, and Passion in Adolescent Readers.
As a Reading Specialist and avid follower of the research of former IRA President, Dick Allington, I have long known the necessity of independent reading for all students. I have implemented independent reading in second through fifth grade and have supported a few middle schools with implementing independent reading, but in high school? It always seems such a different pedagogy drives the work of high school. The block scheduled, traditional literature and specific curriculum drive the work of secondary students. This leads to the wonders:
- How many books do high school students read each year?
- How many books are engaging and accessible to our students?
Allington has long described concern about the lack of reading students do beyond their school day and in some cases during their school day. Penny has ideas. She sees the needs of high school students clearly and provides practical ideas for implementing a highly effective literacy block in high school. Including daily book talks, classroom libraries, written expression and powerful self-reflection are described in her text. This is a must read for teachers in upper elementary through high school. Imagine if we could get all students to experience BOOK LOVE!
